This devotional material is a compilation of writings that were illuminated to me through a very painful and prolonged period of suffering with clinical depression. These thoughts were written during times that I was desperately seeking God for His reassurance and comfort. The Holy Spirit has used them to help me build a more solid foundation to my Christian life, and discover Biblical truth that has developed what I believe about His character and Word. I have chosen to refer to these truths as anchors for faith.

A RETREAT FOR THE WEARY SOUL

He that dwells in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. (Ps 91:1 NKJ)

There is a secret place of protection we can run to, no matter what our condition or situation might be. This place of safety insulates us against worldly fears and helps us not to lose hope.

This secret place is not a natural one, but, rather, a spiritual one, in which the spirit of man takes its silent repose and finds serenity and peace of mind. It is not dependent on outward circumstances or even positive conditions; it is available to all who find it—to them who determine to set their minds upon God, and renew their minds in His Word.

This entails asking God to guard the mind against negative and unscriptural thinking. It becomes a discipline of the soul and spirit, by choosing to think on things that will edify, build, and strengthen one’s faith.

The benefit of retreating and clinging to this secret place is that it is there that we can endure the storms of life that eventually come to everyone. We learn that our security in life is never due to the stability of our uncertain, unstable world; it comes by learning to trust in God’s Word, which is our place of retreat that provides peace and protection.
